Location Versus Soundstage Shooting

Locations

The TV Series used actual Chicago exteriors for authenticity as the setting was a Chicago newsroom. Filming took place along the Chicago River on Michigan Avenue, downtown Chicago, and the Lakefront Park. Many scenes were shot in the winter which created a challenge for actors to remain focused in the Windy City bitter cold. Some scenes had to undertake ADR work in post-production to remove teeth-chatter is was so cold!

Soundstage Photography

Back in the warmth of sunny California and the interior stage work, the actors and crew had a much easier time of dealing with the weather. Sets built for the television show included the main Newsroom Set in which a large part of the action occurred. The Main Cast homes and apartments were also built onstage. Locations in Los Angeles included a church, nightclub, restaurants and apartments for minor characters in which film work was not extensive.
